About this tool

A PDF editor that keeps your document on your device

Fix a typo, update a date or a price, sign a contract, or fill in a form. Click a line to change it, or add text, signatures and images anywhere on the page. Free, with no watermark, and the PDF never leaves your browser.

The editor opens the PDF in this tab and shows every page. Your changes sit on top until you download, and then they are written into the original file, so its text stays selectable, its links keep working, and its form fields stay fillable unless you choose to flatten them. When you change a line of the PDF’s own text, the old text is removed from the page, not hidden under a white box, and the editor checks that nothing else on the page moved.

  • Free, no sign-up
  • Nothing uploaded
  • No watermark

Change the text that is there

Click any line of text to retype it, or clear it to delete it. The new text is set in the closest standard font, at the same size, colour and position.

Sign in seconds

Draw your signature with a mouse, finger or stylus, type it in a handwriting style, or upload a photo of it. Saved signatures stay in this browser for next time.

Private by design

Contracts, tax forms and medical records are edited inside this browser tab. Most online PDF editors upload your file to their servers; this one has nothing to upload to.

Step by step

How to edit a PDF

  1. Open your PDF

Drop the file on this page or press Browse files. It opens in your browser.

  2. Make your changes

Tips for the best results

  • Edit, don’t coverTo change text that is already in the PDF, use Edit text rather than Whiteout. Whiteout only hides what is underneath; Edit text removes it.
  • Scans are picturesA scanned page has no text to edit, just an image of it. Cover the words with Whiteout in the paper colour and type over them with Add text.
  • Sign lastMake every other change first, then add your signature. Editing a PDF that carries a certificate-based digital signature invalidates that signature.
  • Flatten forms you sendTurn on Flatten before you download a completed form if nobody should be able to change your answers.

Questions

Common questions

Everything here runs in your browser, so the answer to “where does my file go?” is always: nowhere. More in the general FAQ.

How do I edit the text in a PDF?

Open the PDF here and choose Edit text. Every line of text the PDF contains gets an outline; click one, retype it, and click away. Clear a line to delete it. Then press Download PDF.

Is this PDF editor free, and is my file uploaded?

It is free, with no sign-up, watermark or daily limit, and nothing is uploaded: the PDF is opened, edited and saved inside your browser on your own device.

Will the edited text match the original font?

The new text is set in the closest of the standard PDF fonts (Helvetica, Times or Courier) at the original size, colour, weight and position. For documents set in Arial, Helvetica, Times or Courier it matches closely; for a distinctive brand font it will look slightly different, and you can pick another font, size or colour for the line.

Is the old text really removed?

Yes. When you change a line, the editor removes that line from the page’s content and checks that nothing else on the page moved. In the rare file where it can’t do that cleanly, it covers the old line instead and tells you so when you download. Whiteout, unlike Edit text, only covers what is underneath.

How do I sign a PDF?

Choose Sign, then draw, type or upload your signature, and click the page where it goes. Drag a corner to resize it. See the Sign PDF page for more about signing.

Can I fill in a PDF form?

Yes. Fields built into the PDF are shown on the page: type into text boxes, tick checkboxes and choose from lists. For a form without fields, use Add text and Tick to write on the lines and boxes.

Can I edit a scanned PDF?

A scanned page is an image, so there is no text to edit. Cover the words you want to change with Whiteout and type the new words with Add text, or use the Image to Text tool to copy the text out.

Can I rotate, reorder or delete pages?

Yes. The bar above each page rotates it left or right, moves it up or down, or removes it. A removed page is taken out of the file, not just hidden.

Can it edit password-protected PDFs?

No. Encrypted PDFs, including ones that open without a password but restrict editing, can’t be rewritten here. Remove the protection in the app that created the file, then edit it.
