About this tool

Remove an image background, at full resolution

Cut the subject out of any photo and get a transparent PNG at exactly the size you started with. Free, with no watermark and no sign-up, and your photo never leaves your browser.

Many background removers shrink the result on the free tier or stamp it with a logo. This one hands back your own pixels: identical width, height and colour, with only the background made transparent. The AI model is downloaded once, cached by your browser and run on your own device, so there is no upload, no queue and nothing to pay for.

  • Free, no sign-up
  • Nothing uploaded
  • No watermark

No resolution ceiling

The model reads a 1024 px copy to find the subject. The mask it draws is scaled back up and applied to your untouched original, so a 48-megapixel photo comes out at 48 megapixels.

Your photo stays on your device

The only download is the model itself, from Hugging Face’s public model hub, and your browser keeps it for next time. The photo is processed in the tab and is never transmitted.

Openly licensed models

Both models are Apache 2.0: ormbg for any subject and MODNet for portraits. Nothing here is non-commercial only, so your cutouts are yours to use, including in commercial work.

Step by step

How to remove a background

  1. Add your image

Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC or other image on the page, or press Browse files.

  2. Remove the background

Choose Anything for products, animals and objects, or People for portraits, then press Remove Background. The first run downloads the model; after that it is cached.

  3. Fine-tune and download

Nudge the Cutout and Feather sliders if an edge needs it, keep the background transparent or pick a colour, then download a PNG, WebP, AVIF or JPEG.

Tips for the best results

  • Pick the right modelPeople is much faster and handles hair and shoulders far better, but it only looks for a person. Anything covers products, food, animals and furniture.
  • Nudge the Cutout sliderIf wisps of background survive, raise it. If the subject is losing its own edges, lower it. The model doesn’t run again, so the change is instant.
  • Keep PNG unless size mattersPNG is lossless and every design tool reads its transparency. WebP and AVIF keep transparency at a fraction of the size; JPEG has none, so it needs a solid colour behind it.
  • Resize afterwards, not beforeCut out at full resolution, then take the PNG to Resize Image. Shrinking first throws away detail the edges need.

Questions

Common questions

Everything here runs in your browser, so the answer to “where does my file go?” is always: nowhere. More in the general FAQ.

How do I remove the background from an image?

Drop the image on this page, choose Anything or People, and press Remove Background. The subject is cut out on your device in a few seconds, and you can download it as a transparent PNG.

Is this background remover really free?

Yes: no watermark, no sign-up, no daily limit and no paid tier for full resolution. It costs nothing to run because your own device does the work; there is no server processing your photo.

Does removing the background reduce the resolution?

No. The model reads a 1024-pixel copy to find the subject, then the mask is scaled back up and applied to your untouched original. The cutout has the same width and height as your file, and every pixel kept has exactly its original colour.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The only thing downloaded is the model itself, from Hugging Face’s public model hub, and your browser caches it. The photo is processed inside the tab and never leaves your device.

Which model should I choose?

Anything handles general subjects: products, food, animals, furniture and people. People is a portrait model that is much faster and better on hair, but it only looks for people, so it won’t find an object.

Why is the first run slow?

The first run downloads the model: about 42 MB for Anything and 25 MB for People. After that your browser has it cached, and only the few seconds of processing remain.

How do I make the background a solid colour instead?

After the cutout, switch Background to Solid colour and pick one. It is painted behind the subject at full resolution, which also makes JPEG a sensible format to save in.

What formats can I save the cutout as?

PNG for a lossless cutout with real transparency, which is what most design tools expect. WebP and AVIF keep transparency at a fraction of the size. JPEG has no transparency, so pick a solid background colour if you save as JPEG.

The edges aren’t quite right. Can I fix them?

Use the Cutout slider: lower keeps more of the subject’s soft edges, higher trims harder. Feather softens the boundary. Neither runs the model again, so both respond instantly.
