Most guides still say a YouTube thumbnail should be 1280 × 720 pixels and under 2 MB. YouTube’s own help page now recommends much larger: 3840 × 2160 pixels (16:9), up to 50 MB when you upload from a computer, with the 2 MB limit applying on mobile. Here are the current numbers and how to make a thumbnail that fits them.

Is 1280 × 720 still OK?

Yes. It’s 16:9 and well above the 640 px minimum, so YouTube accepts it, and it looks fine on a phone. But YouTube shows thumbnails on large TVs and high-resolution screens too, where a bigger image stays sharper. If you design from scratch, work at 3840 × 2160, or at least 1920 × 1080.

How to make your thumbnail the right size

  1. Get the shape right. If your image isn’t 16:9, open it in the crop tool and lock the 16:9 ratio, so YouTube doesn’t add black bars or crop it for you.
  2. Set the pixels. Use Resize Image to set the width to 3840 (or 1920 or 1280); the height follows at 16:9.
  3. Check the file size. From a computer, anything under 50 MB uploads. If you’ll upload from the YouTube app, compress it under 2 MB: switch Compress to Target size, type 2 MB, and save as JPG.

A 3840 × 2160 thumbnail saved as a high-quality JPG is usually a few megabytes, so it uploads from a computer as it is. Keep a PNG only for flat artwork with text, where it stays sharpest.

Design tips for thumbnails people click

  • Design for small screens. Most views come from phones, where the thumbnail is a few centimetres wide. Check it at that size before you upload.
  • Few words, large text. Three or four words are plenty. Thin fonts and small text disappear at phone size.
  • Leave the bottom-right corner clear. YouTube places the video’s length there, on top of your image.
  • One clear subject. A face or a single object with strong contrast reads better than a busy scene. A cut-out subject on a bold background is a common, effective style.
  • Match the video. A thumbnail that promises something the video doesn’t deliver loses viewers quickly.

Shorts thumbnails

Shorts use a vertical 9:16 thumbnail: 2160 × 3840 px recommended, at least 640 px tall. Keep the main subject and any text in the middle of the frame, since Shorts thumbnails are often shown cropped in feeds and on channel pages.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best size for a YouTube thumbnail?

YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels at a 16:9 aspect ratio, and as large as possible. 1920 × 1080 or 1280 × 720 also work, as long as the image is at least 640 px wide.

What is the maximum file size for a YouTube thumbnail?

50 MB when you upload from a computer and 2 MB from the mobile app, according to YouTube’s help page.

How do I get my thumbnail under 2 MB?

Save it as a JPG rather than PNG, and compress it to a target size. Our image compressor finds the highest JPEG quality that fits under 2 MB automatically.

Why does my thumbnail look blurry?

Usually because it was too small to begin with, or heavily compressed. Start from a larger image, at least 1920 px wide, and avoid saving a JPG again and again.

What format should a YouTube thumbnail be?

JPG or PNG. JPG gives smaller files for photo-style thumbnails; PNG keeps text and flat graphics sharpest.
